    Adonde fue enero??

Well, since January is almost done, I really didn’t fill that month out (!) but I will make sure that the kid’s gymnastics instructors are mainly speaking spanish to them.

    Can I share February?

I’ll focus on more around the house vocabulary (I just learned the difference between poner and meter!), such as words for cleaning, collecting garbage, organizing (legos!) etc.

Resources – more post-its and posters around the house. Maybe peruse Bilingual Monkey website a bit

I’ll try to read at least 3 Spanish books a week. This seems low, but we’re busy 🙂

I’m NOT going to speak only English to my Dad when he arrives for a visit.  He’s bilingual-we can practice together

I guess my reward will just be feeling good about implementing a plan.  Is that lame? haha  It’s motivating enough for me

Exposure:   School and classes like gymnastics and swimming where the teachers and other kids speak Spanish.

Paige – I think she’ll thrive being alone in her school class next fall.  She’ll probably be more likely to speak in Spanish without her older brother to speak English with.

Continue watching TV in Spanish, reading books, learning more vocabulary and playing games.

    Need:

The gymnastic teachers mostly spoke Spanish to them 🙂

Keep hanging out with the kids who don’t speak English (the twins, Micaela)

Designate Spanish speaking times.  With Dax this should be mainly with games with me, as he seems reluctant to speak Spanish with the neighbor Sonia or other adults.  I can understand this – I didn’t speak to adults at all as a kid.  With Paige, I could probably designate Spanish-only activites with Sonia.

Reiterate with the adults and children around my kids to speak Spanish to them, especially Dax’s new teacher next year, the babysitter, and their classmates.  And don’t stop reminding them because everyone wants to speak English to my kids!!  This one is difficult.  Because HE knows that most people can easily switch to English.  And they will understand him when he speaks it.  Oddly enough, the need to speak Spanish is very low in Puerto Rico (I would say 80% of the population is fully bilingual)

My kids will achieve: In 2017 Dax achieved the ability to have a simple conversation entirely in Spanish, form sentences and comprehensive thoughts. He feels more comfortable answering native Spanish speakers in Spanish (with more than one or two word sentences).  Most imprtantly, he still retains his language skills even though his teacher in the older class primarily speaks in English.

Paige really flourished in school, learning vocabulary quickly and forming complete sentences and conversations. She even teaches me new words!

    How??

I continued to add vocabulary to our daily routines, I spoke in more complete sentences and dedicated more time to speaking in Spanish myself.  We also played games and practiced with native speakers more.
We used the games we have and the ideas from Bilingual Avenue.
More post its around the house!
But a big one was continuing our language practice over the summer when we traveled back to the States.

    What I did:

I learned more vocabulary, but really focused on thinking in Spanish and speaking without having to think as much.  This way, I could speak more fluidly and rapidly with my kids.  Because if I think too much or take to much time to talk to them in Spanish either they stop listening to me or I get frustrated and switch to English.

I continued to meet with my tutor every week.  I used my recorded audios for my solo car rides to practice.  Two or three times a month I met with a native Spanish speaking friend to practice (asking them ahead of time to speak only Spanish).

    Some of my 2016 highlights:

Dax (6) spoke into a microphone in Spanish in front of the whole school.
Paige (4)  started forming some basic complete sentences in Spanish.

They both understand a lot more Spanish vocabulary, and my mastery of the language was exponential (I still need to think fairly hard and speak slowly but I can hold a conversation!)

    My goals for 2017 are

I wish Dax and Paige were speaking in more complete sentences in Spanish.  We’ve been around other kids who don’t speak English and I didn’t see them interacting with them much.  Also, they say they can’t understand the native speakers very well (the neighbor and the babysitter), so I would like them to understand the native Puerto Rican accent more.

Like Conchi, I have accepted that their progress will be exceptionally slow due to lack of need, even in Puerto Rico, because nearly everyone here in bilingual and will automatically switch to English when they see us gringos, unless we persist and speak Spanish.  Which my kids won’t, given the option 😉  But some day they might want to join clubs and participate in group activities and will need to follow directions and make friends in Spanish.

    Hola amig@s!!

By the time Dax and Paige are 9 and 8, they will be able to freely converse in Spanish.
